Empowering Safety Programme – A Medical Latex (DUA) and MAC collaboration to spread safer sex awareness

Medical-Latex (DUA) Sdn. Bhd., manufacturer of the condom brand Enjoyable Safe Pleasure or ESP Malaysia, launched the Empowering Safety Programme (#ESPiamsafe) in collaboration with the Malaysian AIDS Coouncil (MAC) at Laundry Bar, The Curve on 11 June 2014.

The Empowering Safety Programme aims to dispel the myths surrounding HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and bring safety awareness messages to the public. It is the continuation of a long-term strategic partnership between both parties which began last year during the national level World AIDS Day 2013 with a RM250,000 contribution worth of condoms to MAC for prevention of sexual transmission of HIV activities.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to our partners at MAC and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation. Since 2013, we have collaborated with the hopes of spreading awareness of the protective measures that can be taken against sexually transmitted infections. MAC has made our Empowering Safety Programme possible,” said Mr. Tharampal Singh, Senior Director of Medical-Latex (DUA) Sdn. Bhd. for ESP Malaysia in his speech during the programme launch.

A mini workshop was held following the launch. Facilitated by Dr. Ilias Adam Yee, Assistant Honorary Secretary of MAC, it brought together a group of young people and college and university students to discuss “everything they wanted to know about sex and sexual health (but were too afraid to ask)”. According to a participant, “I found the session interactive and informative. It offered me a safe space where I could open up and ask questions that were otherwise considered taboo. I learned a great deal about safer sex and how to prevent STI’s.”
