Ramadan brighter for children with HIV

For Immediate Release

NGC Energy and Malaysian AIDS Foundation light up Ramadan for underprivileged children living with HIV and other affected communities in a star-filled event co-sponsored by Hilton Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 July 2014 – NGC Energy Sdn. Bhd. spread the joy of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan to over 50 children living with HIV or those from under privileged households affected by HIV in the Klang Valley area served by the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) in an Iftar (breaking of fast) ceremony called Iftar Ramadhan Bersama Komuniti Yang Disayangi held at Hilton Kuala Lumpur today.

The event marked the continuation of a well-established tradition of charity giving for Malaysia’s leading energy company, and paved the way for a dedicated corporate responsibility direction for co-sponsor Hilton Kuala Lumpur, in their common goal of advancing the corporate sector response to HIV & AIDS through community engagement and support initiatives.

In addition to hosting the Iftar dinner, NGC Energy, a valued longstanding corporate partner of MAF and its sister organisation the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC), continued its signature yearlong MiraGas cooking gas sponsorship programme for 22 shelter homes run by Partner Organisations of MAC nationwide for the fourth consecutive year in 2014.

NGC Energy General Manager Julianna Kamaruddin said, “We are pleased to note that our partnership with MAF has gone from strength to strength over the years. Just as we are guided by our aspiration to provide sustainable energy solutions to our customers, this partnership has enabled us to reach out to segments of our society who are most often overlooked and underserved with resources to help them improve their quality of life. At NGC Energy, we remain deeply committed to our corporate philosophy of a people-oriented business, and will continue to explore ways through which we can enhance community empowerment to sustain MAF’s efforts to provide lifesaving HIV treatment, care and support services.”

At the same event, NGC Energy also pledged a donation of RM25,000 to MAF’s Nur Ramadhan fundraising drive and gave away Hari Raya money packets to the children.

Hilton Kuala Lumpur, official hotel partner of the event, expressed its gratitude for the opportunity to contribute back to the community. General Manager Jamie Mead said, “We are proud to partner MAF on such an important social cause and we feel very fortunate to work in a business that presents us with so many opportunities to be part of millions of people’s lives, invite them into our hotels and to be a good neighbor to the various communities. As a leading global hospitality company, we recognise the pressing need to extend our contribution beyond being the hospitality partner for tonight’s event and thus, are excited about the prospect of being a key corporate partner of MAF and contributing directly to the Malaysian HIV response in the near future. We have a dedicated commitment to capitalize on these opportunities to affect real and meaningful change.”

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), it is indeed heartening to see that our cause is able to unite not only two of Malaysia’s prominent corporate players from vastly different industries but also the diverse communities that we serve. And more meaningfully so in the holy month of Ramadan where acts of generosity and charity are encouraged,” said MAF Honorary Secretary Hisham Hussein. He added, “We are deeply humbled by and extremely grateful for the all the support that NGC Energy has given our Partner Organisations and us throughout the years, and welcome the contribution of our new corporate ally Hilton Kuala Lumpur. We will strive to strengthen these partnerships as we continue to address the many challenges and structural barriers that impede access to HIV health care and social services for our communities.”

A bevy of MAF Red Ribbon Celebrity Supporters including Aaron Aziz, Bob Yusof, Fahrin Ahmad, Hafiz Hamidun and Shah Shamshiri made their special appearances at the event much to the delight of the 400-strong crowd made up of members of the communities affected by HIV – underprivileged men and women living with HIV in addition to the celebrated children – as well as government and corporate stakeholders and development partners.

Iftar Ramadhan Bersama Komuniti Yang Disayangi was jointly organised by NGC Energy and MAF for the second year in a row as part of NGC Energy’s many corporate social responsibility efforts to give back to communities in which it operates. This year’s event was also supported by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).
